JOYCE GUNN CAIRNS
Joyce Gunn Cairns MBE has become one of Scotland’s most cherished artists, with nine works in the permanent collection of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, two works in the permanent collection of the City
Art Centre, and works in other major collections including Edinburgh, Oxford, and Cambridge Universities.
Drawing on her deep sensitivity and appreciation of literature, at the core of Gunn Cairns’ practice is expressive gurative work, including portraits and wildlife studies.
‘I am trying in my work as an artist
to honour a dimension of life that is metaphysical rather than immediately tangible. My work has been variously described as moving and creepy. In all areas of my work - my gurative work, my portrait drawings, and my wildlife studies - I am seeking to build bridges, to honour the spirit of the person or animal with whom I am engaging in my work at any given time.’
